Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives. We work with civil society, governments and international organisations to encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy development, and through supporting the actions of others.
The EU policy and advocacy officer will support the work of Saferworld’s Global Policy and Advocacy (GPA) team in Europe ivision (PAC). The team specifically leads the organisation’s engagement with relevant government, inter-governmental and non-governmental institutions in the US, UK, EU and globally to demonstrate the value of the organisation’s work and approach to key audiences. It works closely with Saferworld’s in-country and regional programmes – currently in Central and South Asia, Africa and the Middle East - to ensure that our policy recommendations are grounded in evidence and experiences from conflict-affected contexts and are responsive to people’s needs and perspectives.
Strategies include targeted advocacy towards opinion-shapers and decision-makers, development of research programmes relating to key policy areas, communicating through publications and social media, and organising public events, seminars, roundtables, workshops and delivering advice to relevant government officials, policy specialists, practitioners, businesses and civil society organisations.
The Policy and Advocacy Officer will help influence EU and key member states’ policy through our global and country work on some or all of the following priorities:
Peacebuilding responses to crises and threats (counter-terror, CVE, train and equip, stabilisation, migration);
Global conflict policy processes
Gender and conflict sensitivity
Arms control
The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of the EU policy landscape particularly with reference to the international discourse on conflict, security and development coupled with insight on the debates of for example CT and C/PVE, migration, governance and statebuilding, arms control. S/he will have rigorous analytical skills and proven ability to write policy papers as well as excellent written and spoken English and fluency in French.
