Organization: Saferworld
Country: Myanmar
Closing date: 08 Sep 2019

Saferworld is an independent international organisation working to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives. We work with people affected by conflict to improve their safety and sense of security, and conduct wider research and analysis

A significant focus of Saferworld’s programme in Myanmar is working with communities, particularly women and youth, to identify their conflict issues and security needs, and supporting them to engage with relevant formal and informal security and justice actors – as well as other local authorities – to address these issues. In particular, our programme focuses on non-state security and justice provision in areas of Myanmar where there are multiple authorities, some of whom are engaged in a peace process. We also seek to ensure gender equality and women’s empowerment; challenge harmful gender norms, and promote the engagement and development of civil society actors to improve the situation for vulnerable communities in conflict-affected areas.

Saferworld Myanmar also supports civil society partners to undertake social cohesion and youth engagement programmes in Rakhine state. We have on-going work focused on conflict and gender sensitivity, especially in relation to development and humanitarian interventions in conflict-affected areas. Our aim is to expand both of these strands of work.

Our programme is complemented by research, policy and advocacy efforts aimed at influencing inclusive change processes, including through security sector reform/governance (SSR/G), to support the development of more inclusive, accountable and responsive security and justice sector.

The post-holder will provide strong country leadership and be responsible for further developing, managing and monitoring the country strategy and programme, elaborating the strategic vision, fundraising to pursue programme development opportunities, providing financial oversight, managing staff, and reporting to donors. S/he will also represent Saferworld in interactions with relevant authorities, donors and other stakeholders in Myanmar and globally – developing these relationships to advance our country strategy. S/he will engage in cross-organisational information-sharing and lesson-learning on key policy and strategy issues, and contribute to building synergies between the Asia regional country programmes.

The programme deals with politically-sensitive issues and in a fluid and complex context. In this environment, effective programme management means that the post-holder must lead on planning for and managing a range of expected risks. Finally, the post-holder will contribute to organisation-wide processes and discussions to advance Saferworld's thematic and operational priorities, methodological approaches and organisational development.

This position is an exciting opportunity to lead Saferworld’s country programme in Myanamr. As the programme portfolio develops, the post-holder will contribute learning generated by all of our projects into Saferworld’s evolving strategy for Myanmar and the organisation as a whole.
