Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent and reduce violent conflict and promote cooperative approaches to security. We work with civil society, governments and international organisations to encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy development, and through supporting the development of local capacities and structures.
Somalia programme:
Saferworld’s Strategy 2017-2020 for Somalia/land has three core components.
- Enabling statebuilding, governance and democratisation processes that are participatory, inclusive and accountable at state and federal levels
- Supporting the provision and implementation of security and justice services that are predicated on the principles of fairness and are accountable, accessible and responsive to the communities they serve
- Influencing the role of external actors to enable participatory, inclusive and accountable governance at state and federal levels.
The Country Director will provide overall leadership, strategic direction of Saferworld’s Somalia/land Country Programme. S/he will also be responsible for operational, security and budget management, as well as the effective implementation of the programme in line with organisational strategies, policies, and procedures. The post-holder will directly line manage senior programme staff.
The position could initially be based in Nairobi with a transition to Hargeisa within 6 months.
The person we are looking for will be a proficient manager with significant proven experience managing multi-thematic programmes in development and/or peacebuilding/conflict prevention organisations. S/he will have extensive experience of leading, mentoring, building and developing a team of senior staff with different backgrounds and expertise and leading change in an environment that is constantly evolving.
