Organization: Saferworld
Country: Pakistan
Closing date: 28 May 2018

Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent and reduce violent conflict and promote cooperative approaches to security. We work with civil society, governments and international organisations to encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy development, and through supporting the actions of others. We engage in over 18 countries in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe/Central Asia.

The Pakistan Programme was established in 2010. We currently have two core areas of work in Pakistan:

· Inclusive justice: we work with justice providers who are semi-formal (recognised by the government and tend to follow state law) on issues affecting women, young people and marginalised groups. We help these justice services become more accountable and fair by establishing a shared set of principles to serve the needs of all. We make recommendations on how justice providers can work together with the formal courts to help communities understand their rights and the correct processes for resolving disputes. We reach out to local communities, to raise awareness of justice mechanisms through campaigns, community consultations and practical action – such as the creation of help desks. We support communities in working with civil society groups, justice providers and government authorities to improve the provision of justice. This helps people to understand their own rights and the avenues through which they can address disputes in a non-violent way.

  • Multi-track diplomacy: We support existing Track 1.5 and II dialogues between Pakistan and its neighbours. These dialogues have been running for nine and six years respectively. We remain hopeful of sustaining critical dialogues and also, potentially, to stimulate new and positive conversations that over time open space for Pakistan and its neighbours to pursue long term economic collaboration and peaceful relations.

The programme seeks to achieve change in these two areas through working with local communities and initiatives, national civil society and government stakeholders, including linking local voices and needs to national and international forums.

The Pakistan country office is part of the Saferworld Asia programme, with staff working in Afghanistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh and with partners across the wider Asia region.

The Country Manager will be responsible for further developing Saferworld’s Pakistan country strategy and programme, overseeing the implementation of current and future activities and developing and managing relationships with local partners and with international and national actors in country.

The post-holder will also be responsible for overall team management and security, managing and monitoring programme delivery against objectives, managing and monitoring programme expenditure, fundraising and advocacy, and networking with and reporting to donors. Finally, the post holder will contribute to organisation-wide processes and discussions to advance Saferworld's thematic priorities, methodological approaches and organisational development.
